I had a dream that Melania Trump was coming to our home for a visit, so I was cleaning like crazy and stuffing things in drawers to hide messes. I was exhausted when I got up!!
Then she didn’t show !!!!!!!!!!

bake cookies, bake sugar cookies, baking, cookies, dough balls, food, grandma's cookies, Humor, long marriages, man cave, marriage, sugar cookies, sugar sprinkles

You know “the other woman” that lurks around every corner – well, we have one of those. I even know her name and what she is really good at… Unlike me, she is little, sweet, and everything a guy could want. Her name is (drum roll here) Grandma!!! And she bakes (baked) the best sugar cookies in the world. I have tried and tried but they never quite measure up because it’s hard to compete with a beloved grandma! I decided, since I’m the best wife in the world…to try one more time to replicate her sugar cookies.
Read more: The Other WomanWith all the cooking shows on TV now there is a plethora of recipes for every food imaginable. Surely Grandma’s recipe is in there somewhere. I have tried dough balls rolled in sugar, and cut-outs sprinkled with white, brown,or turbinado sugar. Should they be thick and chewy, thin and crispy? Gingerbready, shortbready? Chill the dough, don’t chill it, ice the cookies, don’t ice them? Add nutmeg? Cinnamon? Sour cream, cream cheese? I have measured, stirred, tasted, tweaked, and tweaked some more.
While I slaved away in the kitchen with a new recipe Bob sat in the recliner in his man-cave, reading. Eventually, I took him a warm, freshly baked cookie. He took a couple of bites as I “casually” hung around waiting because I just knew I was going to hear,” You nailed it! These taste just like Grandma’s!” Yeah, right. What he said was: “Have you given Cricket any.” (Cricket is our dog!!) Talk about adding insult to injury! (She wouldn’t eat them.)
Let it be known that in the case of June versus Grandma, after sixty-five years, ten months, fourteen days, nine hours, thirty-seven minutes, and ten seconds, when the alleged victim could not be satisfied with said sugar cookies by said wife, June, there will no more attempts at desired satisfaction. This case is closed!!

Ah, the joys of growing older. I used to joke that we knew we’d arrived when we were offered senior discounts at restaurants without asking. We just laughed about it – now it’s not so funny.
Weird conversations due to our hearing don’t seem nearly as comical as they used to. The volume bar on our television is a mile long on the low side now and almost nothing on the loud. Having to find the phone via the locater is commonplace; trying to find what Continue reading

Do you think you would want to work until you are 102? I recently interviewed a gentleman that is doing just that. He is still healthy, agile, and sharp as a tack! Mr. Baker works every day, at least in the summer, since he is a surveyor and much of our land here is covered with 4-5 feet (or more) of snow through the winter months. Check out my article on pages 56-57 in Wyoming Lifestyle Magazine. http://www.wyolifestyle.com/Current%20Issue.html He is truly an inspiration.

While our children were growing up we often went backpacking in the Wind River Mountains near Riverton, Wyoming. It was something we all enjoyed doing. Bob continued the tradition with our grandson.
I recall a trip they took in 1997. Shelby was 15. It was during our vegetarian phase which I hadn’t completely bought into and Shelby certainly hadn’t. When they left I fixed myself a pot of ham and beans – something I felt was much tastier with meat than without.
They hiked back about eight miles Continue reading

I recently had cataract surgery. I kinda got the idea that I needed to do that when I kept tripping over the dogs. They objected to that rather strenuously. I mentioned to a friend of mine that I had a cataract and he replied, “Cadillac? I thought you had a Jeep.” Ah, the joys of growing old!
This surgery was Continue reading

My husband snapped this photo this morning to show how tall the hollyhocks have gotten. I am 5'10"- the hollyhocks are over 6'. I didn't know there were any that grew that tall! They are waning now (and I haven't been keeping up with the deadheading) but we're still enjoying them.
My husband also told me that he thought I looked pretty cute – for an old lady… Honesty – 100%. Tact 0%.

Have you ever opened up your washer and seen dozens of foreign objects floating around, along with hundreds of ¼” pieces of cardboard??? It’s an odd feeling – you’ll have to try it sometime.
I had been working on the yard too long and wasn’t exactly paying proper attention to what I was doing. Imagine my surprise when I saw all those wonderful Hefty, 13-gallon trash Continue reading
