My husband’s is a descendent of Elizabeth Mortimor Paul. Could you please give us directions on where this memorial is located. I was told it is in Wyoming, but just how do you get there? We are interested in visiting this grave site. Thank you for your help.

  2. This is one of those situations where we know how to get there but directions are a bit difficult. We went off HWY 89 south of Afton, Wyoming and cut through (some of the road was a bit difficult, especially since it had been rainy) and came out near LaBarge. It’s easy to get lost in there. My husband is working on finding some info that contains better directions. It’s a special place. A spiritual place.
Give me a few days and I’ll get back to you.

Thank you so much for getting back with us so quickly. We will wait for further directions from you.
    With appreciation,

    • I haven’t had much luck finding a better map than is on my blog. I have emailed several historical trail sites and so far so one has replied! If you enlarge this photo it shows the trail pretty well – but it is a good place to get lost! My husband said one time he found the grave – one time he didn’t… 🙂 I think hers is probably the red X in LaBarge Meadow, but I’m not sure. I don’t have a good sense of direction – my husband always tells me not to walk around a tree. Sigh. He isn’t here right now, so when he gets back I’ll ask him if he thinks that is her grave.
I don’t know where you live but we’re getting lots and lots of rain this year so it probably isn’t a good time to go through that road. It’s a couple hours south of Yellowstone/Jackson Hole, Wyoming. All beautiful country! The road is dirt/gravel and some of it is daunting. We have a Dodge Journey and I wasn’t sure we were going to get through there with it in one piece. If we ever go back we’ll do it in our 4WD pickup.
I’ll follow up with more info if/when I get some.
      Have a lovely day.

We’ll be traveling in the eastern part next week. We’ll have to make a special trip to find the gravesite. We appreciate all of your helpful tips. Sheryl

      • My husband just mentioned that he was headed to the grave yesterday when he met an older gentleman coming out who said you couldn’t get through due to the snow and he had pics on his cell phone. This has been an unusual spring. I would love to visit with you if you come this way 307.880.8031 How are you related to Martha Bentley? Jackson Hole/Yellowstone is up the road from us and hour or so.

  4. I had two posts regarding Elizabeth. One on July 25, 2013 and one on Jul 26, 2013. The one on the 25th has a map showing the cut-through, and other graves. . My husband checked it out today and it is still snow-packed. He turned back. If you have access to GPS or MapQuest it could get you to both ends. If for some reason the map doesn’t show up for you let me know and I’ll email it.

Martha Bentley is my sister-in law. She is my husband’s sister. We are all interested in family history. Thank you so much for you phone number. Not sure when we’ll be able to make the trip, but I will let you know.

Hi June, It’s Sheryl again. You mentioned that you could email me the map of the cut-through. I would appreciate that. Thank you.

No I don’t mind you asking. Martha lives north of Nashville TN. She takes care of her mother, Vivian Bentley. Elizabeth Mortimer Paul was Vivians great grandmother. We actually have early reminiscences of Elizabeth’s daughter, Louisa J Estes, & her trip on the Oregon trail in 1862. She mentions her mothers death in childbirth & that she was buried on Bear Mtn.

  8. Hi Sheryl,
I am a writer for Wyoming Lifestyle Magazine and am currently preparing an article about Elizabeth Mortimer Paul for that publication. Stories such as Elizabeth’s touch me deeply. They all went through so much hardship and heartache. This is not something that I will be paid for – it truly is an act of love.
It would be wonderful if you would be willing to share the writings of Louisa pertaining to Elizabeth. You would, of course, be credited for your contribution. The same applies to Martha. I will be contacting her as well.
Do you plan to try to visit the grave yet this year?
Thanks and have a wonderful 4th of July!

I will love to read your article when you finish it. I’ll talk to Martha & one of us can scan & email it to you. Would that work for you?
Not sure if Dave & I will make it up there this year or not. I’ve would like to. If it works out for us I’ll let you know.
Hope you have a good 4th as well.
    Sheryl

  10. Sheryl,
That will definitely work for me. Thank you so much!

  11. Hi Sheryl,
I hope your summer was a good one and that you are looking forward to a nice Thanksgiving with family and friends.
If you would like to send me mailing addresses for you and your sister-in-law I’ll send you each a magazine with Elizabeth’s article in it.
    Thanks,
    June

Hi June, We received the magazine & enjoyed the article. Thank you so much. We are interested in getting 5 more copies of the issue for family members. I will send a note to the email address listed in the magazine. Would that be the best way to do it?

Thank you again. It has been so interesting communicating with you. Wishing you and your family a wonderful Christmas!

  12. Sounds good – I’m glad you liked the article. This is Kati’s busiest time of year with expo’s for the sister magazine “Wyoming Weddings.” It’s also time for the yearly publication for Weddings to come out, as well as a new Lifestyle in January, plus her family stuff. 🙂 I’m a lot less busy than she is so I’ll be happy to send you five more since I’m distributor in this area, but I’ll need you to send your address again. Send it to wshadows@silverstar.com. You might whip out an email to Kati and tell her how much you enjoyed the article. I’m sure she’d love to hear that. She’s a delight to work with.
I have sincerely enjoyed corresponding with you too.
Wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas as well.

  13. Hi Sheryl,
I received the cash and card today. Thank you! I’m truly happy that you all enjoyed the article and I hope you do get to visit her site someday.
It’s really “looking a lot like Christmas” around here. I had to go to town and could hardly see the road.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours!
    June and Bob
